Mohammad Tarak Ramzan encompasses much that is typical of proud Pakistanis abroad. He is very successful in business, and has strong cultural and social affiliations with both the UK and Pakistan. The base for his success firmly lies with his father, Mohammad Ramzan, who arrived in Glasgow in 1949. At the time there were no jobs and like so many other early migrants to the UK, he began working as a door to door salesman.

In the 1950's tights became a major fashion accessory for women and Ramzan quickly cornered the market in Glasgow. He brought tights up from London and dyed them to the colours which were most popular and sold them. This business was very successful but Ramzan was not happy about too much travelling, so he went into the grocery business.

However he didn't like selling meat thus sold this business and, by the mid 1950's, he went into wholesale clothing and a few years later began manufacturing.

Ramzan had always wanted to return to Pakistan, so 1971 he asked his eldest son, Mohammad Tarak Ramzan, who had been academically very successful, gaining six higher and completing his second year at university studying pharmacy, to leave university to take over the business.

In 1982 Mohammad Ramzan felt confident enough to leave Tarak Ramzan in complete control of the company and returned to Pakistan.

In 1987 the family started a manufacturing company in Pakistan as the UK side of the business was already secure. The manufacturing company in Pakistan currently exports clothing goods to Germany, France, Holland and UK.

The family expanded further and took over a retail company trading under the name "Quiz" to start selling the goods which they manufacture. As with all their business dealings the family have approached this expansion professionally and have a centralised computer system which records all sales and does automatic ordering from their wholesale outlet. This will allow the company to expand more efficiently and rapidly whilst retaining complete control over the business.

Tarak Ramzan believes that the key to success is to re-invest the profits into the business to finance growth and development to improve the product. Only by carrying out business professionally can you succeed and flourish.

He would like to see all of his children highly educated but would also ultimately like to see them go into business. He also feels that it is important that our children should learn our culture and one aspect of this which could prove important is in the opening of community halls.

Tarak, feels that his background is more mixed.

He has experienced both UK and Pakistani cultures. His father has encouraged him in business and he travels regularly to Pakistan but he also believes that he was born and brought up in the UK and feels close to that community as well.

He believes that the reconciliation and acceptance of the diverse interests of both cultures is the way forward. Only by accepting that you are part of both worlds can you appreciate the best qualities of each culture. Tarak has three brothers, two in Pakistan and one in the UK.
