Professional Achievements

The last couple of decades have seen a marked shift within the Pakistani community with the children of the earliest migrants now taking part into politics and occupying important and prominent positions within political parties. One such person is Khalid Mahmood who came to the UK as a child from his birth place in Azad-Kashmir, Pakistan.

After attending Golden Hillock School in Small Heath he went on to work at South Birmingham College.  Khalid played Rugby Union for Camp Hill RFC in 1980s and early 1990s he has remained a honorary Vice-President of the club after retiring as a result  of injury.

Having become involved in the local Labour Party and having been inspired by Roy Hattersley and Sir Dick Knowles, former leader of Birmingham City Council, he was elected as one of Birmingham's youngest Councillors in 1990 for the Sparkbrook Ward.

After working in Kuwait for a number of years Khalid returned to the UK in order to study at the University of Central England (now Birmingham City University). It was whilst at university that he was selected to stand as the Labour Party candidate in the 2001 general election. He was elected as Birmingham’s first Asian MP with a majority just under 9,000.

In parliament Khalid has held a number of positions including PPS to Tony McNulty MP and as a member of the Home Affairs Committee. He has fought hard to protect services in Birmingham Perry Barr and has been an often outspoken critic of the record of Birmingham City Council.
